3/6/08—Today, the Odyssey Historical Society
announced that it has discovered a 100-year-old time
capsule! I
wonder what’s in there. Guns from the Civil War? Old
newspapers? The false teeth of some dead President?
Actually,
they’d probably rather not find that.
3/7/08—I decided to make my own time
capsule and
hide it in the secret space in the wall behind my bed.
The next
person who lives in my room can find it. The problem is,
I’m
having a terrible time deciding what to put in it. I asked
Cal, but
he was no help.
“Put this sandwich in there. It’d be a great practical
joke,”
he said, handing me a ham and cheese.
I’m pretty sure the joke would be on me if I did that.
3/10/08—The Historical Society put the
capsule’s
contents on display. It was mostly old watches and toys
and
stuff. A butterfly pendant caught my eye. Why would
somebody
put that in there? Then I noticed an inscription: “To
Eloise, with
all my love. February 14, 1902.” I suddenly realized the
purpose
of this capsule wasn’t to prove that people who lived in
Odyssey
in 1902 owned watches; it was to show they loved each
other.
3/11/08—My capsule is ready. I’ve included a
printout
of my very first Odyssey Blog, which I typed in my room;
a
picture of my dog, Oliver, and me; the Bible verse I read
in this
room before I asked Jesus to be my Savior; a note that
reads,
“To the next person who lives here: This is Alex
Jefferson. Here
are some of the cool things that happened in this room.
I hope
you enjoy it as much as I did. I also left you the false
teeth of
President Gerald Ford. Just kidding.”
