4/2/08—Good news! Odyssey is in the running
for Home and Country Magazine’s “Best Small Town in
America” award. The town is really pulling out all the
stops to impress the judges. Edwin Blackgaard is
directing a reenactment of the founding of Odyssey. My
friends Trent, Mandy and Marvin are in it.
I don’t know anything about Odyssey’s beginnings, but I
hope it isn’t one of those reenactments that are so
overblown and overdramatic that nothing is true. I saw
a movie about World War II last week where a soldier
carried eight guys on his back to safety in the middle of
machine gun fire, all while kissing his wife. And he
never got hit! Come on! Where’s the realism?
4/4/08— I’ve written my own reenactment to
prove that if you don’t stick to the facts, you can make
anything dramatic.
The Pop-Tart Decision
by Alex Jefferson
Alex: I believe I would like some Pop-Tarts for
breakfast, Mother.
Mom: But we have only one left. And your
brother hasn’t eaten breakfast yet.
Alex: A quandary, indeed. For the good of kin, I
shall sacrifice myself and choose a frozen waffle
instead.
Mom: But, Alex! Frozen waffles lack the frosted
goodness of a Pop-Tart!
Alex: I regret that I have but one Pop-Tart to
give to my brother.
Mom: Oh, Alex. You’re my hero.
(Note: In reality, I ate the last Pop-Tart. My
brother had toast. He cried.)
4/7/08—The Odyssey reenactment was great! It
stuck to true history, even though some of it was a little
slow. But thinking about how much Odyssey has meant
to people—and seeing how it started with just one
settler who liked the look of the place—made me
excited about God’s plan. Too bad settlers in the early
1800s didn’t have Pop-Tarts.
